Ophthalmology Residency Training Program
All
applicants for first-year residency positions in ophthalmology participate
in the Ophthalmology Matching Program sponsored by the Association
of University Professors of Ophthalmology. Interviews are granted
during the 18-20 months prior to entry into the program on July
1st. Dr. Dan B. Jones, Sid W. Richardson Professor, Distinguished
Service Professor and Margarett Root Brown Chair; Dr. Elizabeth
Baze, Director, Residency Training Program, and selected members
of the full-time faculty and residents participate in the interviews
of invited applicants and the ranking of candidates for the matching
program.
The Department uses the Central Application Service (CAS) and accepts only applications sent directly from the CAS office. All interested applicants should contact the Central Application Service (CAS) for Ophthalmology:

Review of completed applications for interview selection begins as CAS applications are received; this occurs prior to the November 1 release of Dean's letters.
Approximately
70 applicants will be selected for interviews. Interviews will be
conducted in October, November, and December 2008. Applicants invited
for an interview will be contacted by phone and by e-mail between
September 15 and December 1, 2008. When possible, a choice of interview
dates will be offered. All interview sessions will be conducted
on Mondays and last all day. Candidates generally meet with five
faculty members, tour the Cullen Eye Institute, Alkek Eye Center,
McPherson Retina Center, Ben Taub General Hospital, Texas Children's
Hospital, and the Michael E. DeBakey Houston Veterans Affairs Medical
Center, and have lunch with current residents in the program. Applicants
who wish to check on the status of their applications should call
713-798-5945 or e-mail pblack@bcm.tmc.edu.
Supplemental materials in addition to the CAS Application
are not required by the Department of Ophthalmology.
Interview
dates for 2008 are October 20 & 27, November 17, and December
8 & 15. Applicants not selected for an interview will be promptly
notified by mail or e-mail. Baylor College of Medicine sponsors
the J1 and H1 visa.
Residents are selected for their potential as ophthalmologists to
be exceptional clinicians and scientists. The Department seeks residents
who will possess and embody high personal and professional standards,
take advantage of educational opportunities, and work together in
the program. In return, the faculty pledges to support these residents
in every possible way to develop and achieve their career goals.
