What is a corneal transplant?

The cornea is the clear surface of the front of the eye. Vision that has been reduced or lost due to corneal damage or disease may be restored through corneal transplantation. The most frequently performed transplant surgery, the corneal transplant improves or restores sight in persons with corneal blindness.

What does it cost the donor family to donate? Will it affect the care I receive at the Hospital?

The donor family has no expense and receives no fee for donating. The hospital staff is trained to save lives and will work to provide the best possible care whether or not you are a donor.

Will funeral plans be delayed?

The donation process is designed to not interfere with funeral plans. Open casket services may still be provided.

What can be donated?

Needed organs include the heart, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, liver and lower intestine. Tissue that can be donated includes corneas, eyes, skin, bone, heart valves, veins and tendons.

Are there religions that object to organ and tissue donation?

Many faiths openly encourage donation, seeing this as a final act of giving and as an expression of hope from the donor.
